World Environment Day 2021: The Lowdown

World Environment Day 2021: The Lowdown

We know what you are thinking. Is this like World Margarita Day? Or World Puppy Day?

There are so many random ‘World’ days in the calendar, which ones are actually worth paying attention to?

Well, World Environment Day is!

So, What’s World Environment Day? And Why Should You Care?

Let us be a little nerdy for a second.

World Environment Day is a day created by the United Nations and has been around for nearly 50 years. It’s the most important day in the global calendar to encourage worldwide awareness and action for the protection of our planet. Each year has a theme and a host country. This year’s World Environment Day theme is #generationrestoration and is hosted by Pakistan. It’s all about understanding how important our eco systems are for our environment and what we can do to help restore and protect them.

Some Nerdy Ecosystem Facts

Restoring our ecosystems (such as our beautiful Great Barrier Reef) can have a positive impact on SO many parts of our world.

  • Restoring eco systems can deliver 1/3 of the mitigation needed by 2030 to keep global warming below 2 degrees.
  • Restoring 15% of converted lands could prevent 60% of projected species extinctions.
  • Half of the worlds GDP is dependent on nature.
  • Every year, the world loses 10 million hectares of forest.

And What Can We Do?

It’s a big thing to ask. As one person, how can you really help solve such a MASSIVE problem? Yes, you can join in a beach clean-up or you could donate to a great charity. These would be amazing things to do!

But what can you do, every day, in your home or at the supermarket?

You could find out a little more about the brands you use at home and whether they are doing their bit for the environment. This could be in terms of the ingredients they use or even their manufacturing process.

To kick start you out, here’s a little about some of the sustainable things we are doing.

How Cove Is Helping Our Ecosystems (And Being More Sustainable!)

Grey Water Safe

What does grey water mean? Grey water is water from our showers, basins and kitchen that can be re-used in our gardens! For a product to be grey water safe, it needs to have ingredients that do not harm our environment. Phosphates are a common ingredient in cleaning products such as laundry liquid that have a negative impact on our planet. High levels of phosphates can cause excessive growth of algae in our water ways. This increased algae, sucks up all of the oxygen and has a harmful effect on marine life.

From our concentrated laundry detergents to our refillable bathroom cleaners; none of our products contain phosphates or any kind of harsh chemical that can have a harmful effect on our ecosystems once you have used them.

Less Plastic Waste

If you have watched Seaspiracy or paid attention the last time you went for a walk down the beach, you would be shocked at the amount of plastic that ends up in our oceans. Reducing the amount of single use plastic we produce means less plastic pollution and waste impacting wildlife, coral reefs and any kind of marine life. It also helps reduce what goes to landfill and encourages us all to reuse!

Cruelty Free & Vegan

What does it mean to be cruelty free? It’s not just about not testing your product on animals. It’s about making sure that none of your ingredients in the process are tested on animals either. We are certified #choosecrueltyfree and will never test on animals.

Oh, and no animal derived products here either. Always will be 100% vegan.

So next time you find a cool product or brand, check out their website or socials to find out more about what they are doing. Most brands (that you should try) have a sustainability section on their website.

And make sure you celebrate this World Environment Day! Maybe with a margarita and a puppy?
